I Got Issues x YG : Mave's Take

t’s been 9 years since Compton Artist YG has provided us with a full studio album and I must say “I Got Issues” was worth the wait.

For his roll out he had unveiled songs like “Toxic”

(Credited with production Swish, Larry Jayy, and Reece Beats) and “Scared Money” that featured J. Cole and Moneybagg Yo.

“What’s up with your brother? Shit, I ain’t talk to Mustard. I just fell back”

YG, immediately addressing his falling out with Long time collaborator DJ Mustard that stemmed in 2014 allegedly over finances that had to do with “My Krazy Life”

"It wasn't a shot at YG; it was a shot at Def Jam," Mustard told MTV News exclusively while in New York to DJ at a Roc Nation Sports Throne Boxing event. "But, at the same time, it was a miscommunication, because it was already all done with."

But this was not the highlight of the 14 track album! Here’s some takes I had while listening.

“Slide” had became such a success with YG featuring H.E.R. Why not replicate that connection with another feature on

Go Dumb”  Intertwining elements of piano, bass, guitar and sampling E-40’s “Tell Me When to Go” (2006)

“No Love” providing that smooth west coast sound with a rigid base that paired well with the electric guitar of course sampling Bobby “Blue” Bland’s “Ain’t no Love in The Heart of The City”

The guitar introducing  “Sober” that featured Post Malone and Rody Ricch was a perfect element to the song. This guest appearance brought a delivery out of YG in his tonality that we don’t hear often.

The production throughout this album was consistent.

I highly favored “No Weapon”  The Saxophone radiated throughout this song with high keys, and trombones soothing the base.  I enjoyed how symphony built throughout the song.  This featured Nas with influences of Ice Cubes 1992  “Today was a Good Day”

YG closed it out with “Killa Cali”  it shined light on the beauty of where he was from  but painful realization that so many have been lost there. He painted a vivid picture on the topic.
